EP 02: Harnessing the Power of Small Gestures to Make Some Magic

crushing-it-goal-magic.JPG

This episode is all about the little things... the easy stuff that we all can do to strengthen our relationships and spread joy to the people we care about. Things that cost us almost nothing, but mean the world to the recipient. Things we sometimes forget to do.

The best small gestures let someone know: "I see you and I appreciate you."

Cynthia and I came up with this list of small gestures that you can try today. Take a look while you give the episode a listen, and let us know if you think of some more tiny gestures!

  • Leave a note on a co-worker's keyboard letting them know they did a great job on a project
  • Leave a supportive, positive comment on a lonely blog post that inspires you
  • Text a funny animated .gif to someone who's down in the dumps
  • Look your cashier in the eye and smile
  • Call your mom
  • Ask your dad for advice
  • Do a household chore that your partner hates doing
  • Make someone breakfast in bed (even if it's just cereal or a bagel)
  • Write "I love you" on a mirror
  • Ask a friend if they need a hug
  • Tell someone you miss them
  • Every time you think of someone, let them know (they may not realize you think of them)
  • Open the car door for your passenger
  • Take a stressful task off someone's plate
  • Ask a friend for help with a problem (people love to feel needed)
  • Call someone out of the blue
  • Shovel your neighbor's driveway
  • Let someone else shine bright
  • Wave at a stranger who lets you merge into traffic
  • Keep small bills in your pocket and car to give to homeless people
  • If someone made something cool, make sure they know you think it's cool
  • Ask someone how they're really doing and listen as hard as you can
  • Send someone a link to a song you think they'd like
  • Say you're sorry
  • Say thank you
  • Say I miss you
  • Say I love you

Keep it Magical,
Brennen & Cynthia

EP 01: Michael Banks on Overcoming Adversity Through Bravery and Perseverance

michael-banks.jpg

I first met Michael Banks at a mock pitching competition when I was a scholar in the Goldman 10,000 Small Businesses program. I was scared to death that day (literally shaking and sweating), but I will never forget how Mike helped me through my nerves and inspired me to improve through positive feedback.

I brought him some Whipped Bakeshop cupcakes as a thank you gift and we've been friends ever since.

I think it's fair to say that Mike's support helped give me the courage to launch this podcast with Cynthia. That's why I wanted to make sure he was the first person we interviewed for GOAL MAGIC.

As the CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce, Michael Banks is an influential community leader here in my hometown of Philadelphia. He's a big believer in empowering people to achieve their dreams.

In this episode, Mike shares his amazing personal journey from dropping out of high school at the age of 17 to running a multi-million dollar trading desk at one of the biggest banks in the world.

And that’s just the start.

Believe it or not, Mike leveraged his people skills at an hourly job at Wawa to make it all happen. Well, that and he can also convert fractions to decimals in his head.

But it was mostly the people skills.

Mike also shares how he dug out of his deepest hole to emerge stronger and even more resilient.

If you're feeling stuck facing a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, this is the episode for you!

If you'd like to connect with Mike, you can find him on LinkedIn and also follow him on Instagram @mikemotivates_.

Keep it Magic,
Brennen

EP 00: Stuck in your life? We were too. Introducing GOAL MAGIC!

We took this selfie at our very first GOAL MAGIC recording session at Cynthia's apartment.

We took this selfie at our very first GOAL MAGIC recording session at Cynthia's apartment.

Welcome to the very first episode of the GOAL MAGIC Podcast! The idea behind the show came when the two of us met for coffee at La Colombe in Fishtown, Philadelphia one day in the summer of 2017.

We had worked together over a decade ago at a marketing agency, and we were both really excited to reconnect after exchanging supportive messages in LinkedIn.

As we laughed and reminisced about old times, it was easy to see why we used to be such close friends back at the agency. And there was so much to catch up on!

Cynthia was working on escaping toxic corporate life (lots about this in the episode) and launching a new mission-driven company called SheWill, dedicated to empowering women in the workplace and beyond.

Meanwhile, my wife Zoë and I were running Whipped Bakeshop, an award-winning bakery in Philly. It's an unbelievable job with unlimited access to baked goods.

On the surface, everything was going great!

But it slowly dawned on both of us... almost at the same time. Despite all the forward progress, we felt a little stuck.

SheWill wasn't yet gaining the kind of traction that Cynthia wanted. For some reason, SheWill was reaching and resonating with more men than women, so Cynthia kept hearing from all these men who wanted to support her or who needed support (ironically). Cynthia wanted bigger things and had tons of ideas, but wasn't exactly sure how she would get there.

And Whipped Bakeshop wasn't growing as fast as I wanted. On top of that, the stress of running a small business was weighing on me mentally and physically. I was losing sleep and putting on weight. Not good.

We started to workshop each other's problems right then and there.

And that's when a thousand-watt lightbulb went off in our minds.

Maybe other people feel stuck just like we did. Maybe lots of people. Maybe you do too.

A few days later, Cynthia texted me and asked if I wanted to start a podcast with her to help people get unstuck (and get unstuck ourselves).

It took me a long while to respond.

I loved the idea, but I was scared. I'm introverted and not used to being in the spotlight. And neither of us had any idea how to launch a podcast! Ahhhhhh!

But eventually I said YES because the goal was so powerful: to help people around the world get unstuck and get going. To help people reach their unlimited potential.

It felt right.

Here's the bottom line: You're not stuck. You can do anything, and you can grow as a person.

Cynthia and I are so grateful that you're here right now at the start of this journey.

Please remember to subscribe to GOAL MAGIC wherever you get your podcasts. Let's keep this train of positivity going!
